Many colleges and institutions offer degrees in ultrasound. For the most part, every ultrasound technician will have the same basic training but your specializations will vary greatly. Some of the specializations include echocardiography, neurosonology, ophthalmology. vascular technology, gynecology and many more. Each specialization comes with it's own set of protocols and directly influence your salary. Some of these are quite complex and it may take some time to gain proficiency in them. It is not uncommon for ultrasound techs to gain more specializations years later if they wish to move to a new field.

You should have no trouble finding schools in your area online. Be sure to do your research and make sure the school is legitimate and has good references. This is very important if you are doing an online school program. There are many scammers out there today so do your research. Ask as many questions as you can. Make sure you have all your supplies for school ahead of time. The most expensive one outside your tuition will be your textbook. The best thing you can do is try to buy the book online or pick up a used copy and the student bookstore. Paying full price can land you anywhere from $60 to $100.

After the first few weeks of class, you may begin looking for internships around the area. An internship will give you a better understanding of the work environment and give you an edge over your graduating classmates. One of your professors should be able to help you get one. Intern programs usually begin in the summer and until the end of it. At the very least you will be able to network and build up some industry contacts. Don't forget to ask for a letter of recommendation when you complete the program from your professor and your supervisor.
